A major incident can occur any time, anywhere. A large scale traffic accident, an explosion, flooding, release of HazMat. Usually there are many casualties.
At first chaos will reign, and unless such a situation is handled expeditiously and effectively, the outcome can be dismal.

What is needed?
An approach in which everyone knows what to do and how to do it.

Will that happen “naturally”, without preparation ?
Experience has shown over and over again that all relief personnel have to study and be trained beforehand.
In the United Kingdom a 2-day training course has been developed: “Major Incident Medical Management and Support” (MIMMS).
Based on military principles (the author is a Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps), MIMMS gives a template for dealing with incidents in the civilian world. There also is a military application, e.g. during CIMIC operations, and at present the course is also being run at the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany.

The 1-day course CIOMR is offering is not the full “MIMMS”; it gives a number of highlights, using the MIMMS template.

We hope that the participants will recognise the value of the MIMMS approach.
