Interallied Confederation of Medical Reserve Officers’ (CIOMR) Summer Congress

Medical professionals including surgeons, nurses, dentists, veterinarians and pharmacists from across NATO met in Sofia, Bulgaria in early July for the CIOMR Summer Congress. CIOMR is the sister organisation of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers (CIOR), and CIOMR and CIOR cooperate closely in various fields.

Two-way traffic

Military medicine is medicine in less than ideal circumstances and military medicine is much, but not exclusively, involved with trauma.

Knowledge of and insights in trauma, its mechanisms and treatment are not static; they are constantly developing. Information on the subject is readily available in the literature, both civilian and military.

CIOMR officers visit Rehabilitation and Care Center in Ankara

Fifteen CIOMR officers traveled to the Turkish Armed Forces Rehabilitation Center and Care Center in Ankara to see how Turkey is caring for its wounded warriors. Most of the patients were victims of landmines.

German team wins First Aid Competition

A German team took first place in the 2008 CIOMR first aid competition. Forty-nine teams competed in the annual event that tests the medical response skills of reservists. Each team of four competitors who went through a planned scenario and were judged on their reactions to an injured person in a simulated wartime environment.

Formerly, when we were talking about penetrating injuries we thought about knives and bullets, and in the civilian arena all this is still more or less valid. In the military however, things have changed. Bullet injuries have become relatively rare and experience from Iraq and Afghanistan shows that fragments and blast are the order of the day. The situation on the battlefield has changed over time Colonel Walter Henny says.

Avec un oeil scrupuleux, les juges ont étudié les concurrents pendant qu'ils évaluaient la situation et commençaient à administrer les premiers soins. Sous les majestueux pins lettons, la compétition de premiers soins de la CIOMR était en plein déroulement avec les équipes militaires internationales - chacune composée par trois participants – rangées les dans les tentes, parfaitement camouflées et impatientes de commencer.
